Either way, I feel it's pretty crucial to have at least a basic idea of the person you spend a good chunk of your time writing with.
We're all real people whose lives do not completely revolve around RP forums, and it's good to know in advance what could potentially get in the way so there will be less confusion and misunderstanding later on. Plus, it's the only way we can ever hope to feel closer to one another and truly get the best out of the roleplaying experience.
